We are surrounded by toxins. It is in our homes, on the streets, in our workplace, in the products we use and in the foods we eat.
The constant exposure to harmful toxins can lead to potential health risk such as cancers, respiratory illnesses, problems with reproductive health and so forth. Limiting exposure to chemicals takes a conscious effort.
It would be impossible for us to eliminate all toxins, but making small changes in one or more areas can help protect yourself and your family and lessen your body’s toxic burden. Here are some approaches that will help decrease your toxic load:
Avoid Chemical Scents
Mainstream chemical perfumes, colognes, air fresheners are all derived from a strong mix of synthetic ingredients such as petroleum, mineral oils, solvents, stabilizers preservatives or dyes.
Avoid Unscented Chemical Products
Just because a product is unscented, it doesn’t necessarily mean the product is not toxic. Quite the contrary. Unscented chemical products are actually even more toxic, using strong masking fragrance ingredient to cover up the original smell. Many of these chemicals have been associated with hormone disruption or allergic reactions.
Avoid non-stick cookware
The absolute worst of the worst. The non stick material known as PFOA and PFOS found in all non stick cookware is a ‘human carcinogen’. Invest in quality copper-clad stainless steel pans as an alternative. It’s harder to clean, but you’ll feel a lot healthier.
Avoid Wrinkle Resistant Clothing
One particular type of clothing to stay well away from are the ones that claim to be wrinkle resistant. The fabrics from these clothing line have been treated with formaldehyde that do not wash out. The safest fabrics are cloths made with organic cotton, wool, bamboo, soy, silk and linen.
Avoid Chemical Household Products
These includes multi-purpose sprays, shower screen scum removal, chemical fabric softeners, bleach, detergents. These products are very toxic and are unfriendly and harmful to the environment. There are so many natural alternatives such as a natural citrus base home cleaner, vinegar, eucalyptus oil, vegetable extracts, mineral salts… and so forth. Open up your windows frequently to air out your home.
Avoid Chemical Gardening Products
Pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, and chemical fertilizers are quite toxic to the nervous system. If you must toxify your garden, then remember to always use protective equipment such as gloves and masks to avoid skin contamination and inhalation of chemicals.
Try to avoid these chemicals as much as possible. Instead of using a weed killer, try using your hands instead if you have the time. Instead of using a chemical fertilizer, try using a natural cow manuer as a replacement.
Avoid chemical skin care
Try to avoid anything on your skin that is loaded with chemicals. What goes on your skin will ultimately be absorbed into your blood stream. There are many great natural organic skin care alternatives to make you look pretty, but without the toxic burden.
Avoid chemical foods
” You are what you eat”. There is certain some truth to this statement. Eating foods that has been grown with known pesticides and fertilizers increase the toxic levels of chemicals in your body. Likewise, most processed foods are packed with preservatives, colors, dyes and many other chemicals. Reading the ingredients on labels and being an ingredients expert is the key to successfully sussing out the good from the bad.
Use a Filter on your taps
The water you use to wash your food and clean your body with commonly contains an irritating level of chlorine. By installing a filter in your water system, you will be able to block out 99.9% of the toxins from your water. The best filters are either reverse osmosis or water distillation system.
