Great news to the natural skin care world. New reports have indicated that scientists have found a way to convert soybean oil into a sunscreen that is both non-toxic and anti-aging. Presented by Joseph Lazlo, PhD to the American Chemical Society, it showed how ferulic acid can bring about this conversion. Both UV-A and UV-B lights are absorbed by such a sunscreen.
This means that in the near future, this natural soybean sunscreen agent could replace petroleum-derived ingredients in a variety of personal-care products.
Not only is the new bio-sunscreen more environmentally friendly and kinder to your skin, but it may also be more effective.
Find out how the soybean oil work to fight off the UV rays?
Scientist have found a method to convert soybean oil into a highly effective bio-based sunscreen with an active ingredient, called Feruloyl Soy Glycerides (FSG). FSG is currently produced commercially by iSoy Technologies Corporation
FSG is made of ferulic acid, found naturally in hundreds of plants, into soybean oil. The use of ferulic acid along with vegetable oil produces a water-resistant material capable of absorbing both UV- A and UVB light. FSG apart from being a sunscreen also works wonders on wrinkles and also as an anti-aging agent.
“The skin ages not just from exposure to the sun but also from air pollutants and other environmental effects. We believe that this molecule (ferulic acid) could prevent some of the damage caused by the free-radical processes involved in those environmental exposures. That’s particularly important for preserving the integrity and health of skin tissue. The approach builds on knowledge that antioxidants consumed in the diet or applied topically can prevent some of that damage,” said Laszlo.
Convention chemical sunscreens contain the toxic ingredients oxybenzone and benzophenone that is a hormone disruptor that could contribute to the disruption of aquatic species reproduction. Some sunscreen ingredients generate ROS when exposed to UV-A, which can damage DNA.
“We’re trying to provide nature-inspired skin-care materials that avoid such health concerns and at the same time have fewer adverse environmental impacts,” said Laszlo.
“Our findings support the hypothesis that FSG can protect sensitive cellular components and reduce the impacts of skin sun exposure. Our work also demonstrates how agricultural materials can be used to craft safe and useful consumer products,” he said.
The soy-based sunscreen products have been in commercial development since the early 2000s, and have been sold in commercial products since 2007, but are yet to be widely seen in the sunscreen market. Further research still needs to be conducted before it gets pushed into the mainstream market.
The future is looking bright in the sunscreen world. Lets hope we can one day say goodbye to the toxic petroleum based sunscreens and welcome to the world an eco sunscreen made of natural soybean oil.
