How Toxic is Your Hair Spray?

Ever wondered how the common hair spray holds your hair in place making it look stylish but feel disgusting? With some hair sprays making your hair so hard and stiff, you can use your head as a helmet! More than likely the hair spray that you’re using has some form of synthetic silicon and film forming (plastic) ingredients to keep your hair rock hard. Now these ingredients are not exactly good for your health.

Read the label – Flammable. Do not breath in. Avoid fire and flame. Avoid spraying near eyes. Keep out of reach of children. Use only as directed.

Common ingredients found in your common hair spray can includes Polyvinylpyrrolidone, Propylene glycol, Polyvinyl alcohol, Hydroflurocarbon, Denatured alcohol, synthetic silicons, film formers (plastic ingredients) and Carboxylmethylcellulose. All of these ingredients are considered to be toxic or poisonous, and regular users of hair spray can be damaging to your health. Less serious health reactions may include allergic skin reactions, eye and nasal irritation with more severe complications leading to burning of the eyes, burning of the throat, blurred vision, systemic poisoning, difficulty in breathing (agitate asthmatic conditions) or severe rash.

Aerosol and pump sprays produce fine droplets which can be inhaled deeply into lungs and transferred into your bloodstream. Inhalation of spray can also cause respiratory irritation and breathing difficulties. If you must use a spray, choose pump over aerosol as spray droplets are slightly larger. Hair gels and pomades maybe a better choice.
