Dry Brushing

How does our body respond to the build up of toxins within our bodies? Well the human body is a fascinating piece of work. We have numerous detoxification systems in place through the working mechanisms of our organs and glands to flush out any unwanted rubbish. These organs include the kidneys, liver, lungs, mucous membranes, lymphatic system….. and lets not forget THE SKIN.

All mechanisms should work together as a team to work at full capacity. So if the skin isn’t breathing properly, it also puts additional stress on other members (liver and kidneys) to detoxify what could otherwise be directed out of the body through the skin.

So how does dry brushing work to improve your health?

1. Exfoliates Dead Skin Cells Unclogging Pores

Skin is constantly renewing. Dry brushing helps to exfoliate dead skin layers speeding up this renewal process. Clean opened pores means that toxins in sweat and oil can freely leave the body. The build up of dead skin cells can lead to more serious skin problems such as acne, dandruff, eczema or psoriasis. Healthy, breathing skin contributes to overall body health.

2. Improves Nervous System

Dry skin brushing rejuvenates the nervous system by stimulating nerve endings in the skin.

3. Toughens the Immune System

Dry skin brushing strengthens the immune system by stimulating the lymph vessels to drain toxic matter into organs such as the liver or kidney helping to accelerate the clearing of toxins and purification of the body.

4. Stimulates the Lymphatic System

All detoxification occurs first and foremost through the lymph. Dry brushing literally moves the lymph containing large proteins and matter that cannot be transported in any other way back into circulatory system. Dry brushing can help speed up the process to remove proteins from the interstitial spaces.

5. Stimulates Blood circulation

Dry skin brushing increases circulation to skin, encouraging your body’s discharge of unwanted wastes.

How To Dry Skin Brush?

Before doing any dry brushing, it is important to select the right dry brush containing soft bristles which is gentle to the skin and a long handle for hard to reach places. Stay away from hard bristles brushes as they can cause damage to your skin.

You can start from your head down or from the feet up. Make sure to move your brush strokes in the direction of your heart because if you stroke away from your heart, it puts extra pressure on the valves within the veins and lymph vessels. Make sure to avoid brushing infected, inflamed, or broken skin.

Dry skin brushing should be done daily for 5 – 10 minutes finished off with a warm shower afterward to rinse off all the dead skin cells.
