Hyaluronic acid. The name may sound like something from a science experiment, but hyaluronic acid is actually a naturally occurring substance found in our skin. Thanks to its water retaining and antioxidant properties, it may just be the secret to smoother, younger looking skin. Keep reading to find out more about hyaluronic acid and its amazing power to turn back the clock.
What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a gel-like substance naturally produced by our bodies. Its main job is to keep our tissues well lubricated and moist. Although it’s in almost every one of our cells, the greatest concentration is in our skin – almost 50 percent of our body’s total hyaluronic acid is found there.
Hydration keeps skin looking young
When skin is properly hydrated it looks soft, plump and healthy. But as we get older, our skin becomes drier and less able to retain moisture. We lose firmness and fine lines and wrinkles appear. One reason our skin becomes drier as we age is that our body produces less hyaluronic acid. Exposure to the sun, cigarette smoke and pollution can also decrease amounts of HA in the skin.
While we can’t stop the aging process, we can give our skin a helping hand. Research shows using hyaluronic moisturisers, creams and serums can significantly improve skin hydration, firmness and elasticity. It’s also proven to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. When used in skincare products, hyaluronic acid essentially acts like a sponge, plumping and restoring firmness. It can actually retain over 1,000 times its weight in water, which is why HA makes such a great moisturiser.
For those with ultra dry skin in need of a serious boost of moisture try Madara SOS Instant Moisture + Radiance Hydra Mask. Its special blend of linseed, nettle, Northern peony, natural sugars and hyaluronic acid instantly improves the look and feel of your skin and helps prevent further dehydration. Another one of our favourites is The Body Deli Sea Cucumber Gelee Facial Hydrator. Combining organic aloe vera, cucumber, hyaluronic acid and tamarind seed extract, this luscious, hydrating gel gives skin a dewy glow while it cools, soothes and moisturises.
Hyaluronic acid protects and repairs damaged skin
In addition to hydrating, hyaluronic acid helps protect your skin from the sun by creating a natural barrier against UVB rays. For even greater protection, choose a multitasking product like Madara Anti-Pollution SPF 15 CC Cream. It combines the anti-aging benefits of hyaluronic acid along with additional sun protection and tone correcting coverage.
Hyaluronic acid also helps repair skin damaged by sun, pollution and other environmental hazards thanks to its antioxidant properties. Free radicals can break down collagen, making our skin sag and cause wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid helps repair this damage. Its healing powers are so strong it’s even been found to help wounds heal faster.
Adding hyaluronic acid to your skincare routine
One of the best things about hyaluronic acid is that it’s great for any skin type, from oily skin to the most sensitive.
If you aren’t sure where to start, a serum is a good place. Pai’s Back to Life Hydration Serum uses hyaluronic acid along with a blend of coconut extract and berries to help lock in moisture and keep skin looking plump and healthy.
Another great choice for introducing hyaluronic acid into your daily skincare regime is Safeas Grape Berry Anti-Aging Day Cream. With a potent complex of hyaluronic acid and grape polyphenols, it visibly reduces wrinkles and improves skin elasticity, leaving skin looking younger and smoother.
Hyaluronic acid is a safe, natural way to hydrate skin and reduce the signs of aging. If you want to add a product with hyaluronic acid to your skincare routine, but aren’t sure which one is best for you, just pop into one of our stores or give us a call.
