In the previous article, we talked about the fun of homemade natural perfume and the simple steps required to produce your own bottle. Sticking with the topic of homemade personal beauty products, we will in this article teach you the basic craft for making a homemade Organic lip balm.

From summer to winter, lip balms are required all year around to help protect your lips from the dry cold winter months and the harsh summer heat. Unfortunately, a lot of commercial lip balms found in chemist and shops are petroleum based, and this ingredient should be avoided due to its links to cancer, reproductive damage, immune system toxicity, endocrine disruption and neuro-toxicity.

The beauty of making your own lip balm is that you’ll know that it’s free from petroleum jelly, artificial colours, artificial flavouring, preservatives and other questionable ingredients. What you’ll be using in replacement are natural organic ingredients such as beeswax, shea butter, cocoa butter, honey…… the list is endless.

Like all homemade beauty products, it is actually quite simple to make
Using a natural, organic base infused oils, essential oils, and beeswax, you can create nourishing lip balm that will protect your lips against the drying effect of the cold, wind and central heating.

Step 1. Get your ingredients ready. Beeswax, sweet almond oil, vitamin E capsules, honey, lemon oil (optional ingredients – rosehip oil, peppermint oil and shea butter)

Step 2. Put 1/ 4 teaspoon of honey, 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of beeswax, 1/ 2 tea spoon of shea butter and 1 tea spoon of sweet almond oil into a small cookingpot and on very low temperature, heat until it all becomes a liquid.

Step 3. Allow the base to cool a little (don’t let it cool completely, just a little) then add a few drops of your essential oils such as lemon oil, rosehip oil and peppermint oil and squeeze 1 vitamin E capsule and mix slowly

Step 4. Pour into a small sterile glass jar and let it cool at room temperature. The lip balm is ready to use in a few hours.

The most exciting thing about making your own lip balm is that you have so much room and freedom to play around.  By adding a tiny bit more or less of various ingredient, you may get a completely different consistency and flavour. As a general rule, if your lip balm comes out too soft, add a more beeswax; if it’s too hard, add a little more sweet almond oil (or other oil). The power to create is in your hands, so lets have some fun.

I never knew that preparing a homemade organic lip balm is so simple and less time consuming. After all no products can take the place of homemade products. The most important thing is that we don’t use petroleum .We get a self satisfaction while using this lip balm as we know which products are used and that how good these products are for our lips without any side effects.

I will only use lip balms that are made out of all natural ingredients and don’t contain parabens or any petroleum products. I consider myself to be a lip balm connoisseur because I have literally tried over 30 kinds of lip balm. I prefer either minty or fruity lip balms, so when I heard that the Made from Earth Spearmint and Blueberry Balm was really minty, I had to try it!

If this lip balm was so thick and waxy, it would be one of the best. I love it because it is made with natural ingredients, and because it is nice and minty which makes your lips tingle. Unfortunately, it is very thick and waxy and it doesn’t glide on my lips like other lip balms do. That is my only complaint.

I would recommend it to others to try because I am a little picky when it comes to lip products, so it might just be me.
