Trends indicate that in 2011, the beauty cosmetic and skin care industry will be greener than ever.

What does this mean when we say greener than ever?

Experts at the “Mintel Beauty Innovation” centre sees an increasingly more “Down to Earth” trend with the beauty industry with emphasis on sustainability issues and a marketing geared towards green beauty.

We’ve seen a significant growth in the green beauty industry in 2010, and 2011 will just be a continuation of this trend to greener product ingredients and formulations. Already we’ve seen a 5% increase on products with environmentally-friendly packaging.

Nica Lewis, the head consultant at Mintel Beauty Innovation says that, “2011 will see beauty companies placing increased importance on the environment, focusing on sustainable sourcing with attention to maintaining biodiversity. A renewed emphasis on repackaging to minimize waste will also be a factor”

According to “Mintel Beauty Innovation”, 13% of skin care, hair care and cosmetic products launched in 2010 made the paraben-free claim (up 5% from 2008), while almost 9% of made organic claim (twice as many as in 2007).

Nica explains that “Paraben-free claims actually outpaced organic and all-natural claims in new skincare, hair care and cosmetics launches in 2010, backing up Mintel’s Nu Natural trend that predicted that brands would emphasize results and free-from claims over certification,”

So in 2011, we should be expecting increasingly more brands making claims of “free from parabens”, “free from preservatives”, free from SLS”, “free from petrochemicals” etc…….

It’s not easy for skin care companies to go organic and green. In order to be successful, will have to learn how to source natural and organic raw materials and how to manage the price pressure due to the varying supply and demand. They will also have to master the challenges of green chemistry: such as the use of sustainable surfactants, ‘green’ solvents and alternatives to parabens and other preservatives.

As consumers I cannot stress enough the importance of becoming even more vigilant when selecting your organic natural skin care products. Know your brands and read your ingredients before purchase. There are lots of companies out there just riding this eco wave to earn an extra buck without any ethical consideration for us consumers. All the hyped up claims on the packaging may not be what you get in the product.

Be careful not to throw your hard earned money away.
