10 Ways to Green Your Home
Your mission, should you choose to accept, is to GREEN YOUR HOME.
Don’t worry! Greening your home doesn’t mean splashing out large amounts of money. On the contrary, a greener home is a more efficiently running home that will save you money for the long term.
Here are 10 was that will help you to make your home a little bit greener.
Roof & Lighting
Insulate your home . Make sure your home is insulated with a green material made from natural fiber, free from chemicals and irritants
When you need to replace a light bulb, screw in an ENERGY STAR qualified compact fluorescent light bulb.
Turn off the lights when leaving the room.
Better yet, to relax after a long day of work, light a soy candle which naturally adds fragrance and lighting to your home.
Dryers & Washers
If you’re looking to buy a new washer or dryer, keep in mind that front-load washers are more efficient than top-load since they use gravity to clean the clothes. Washers and dryers are energy hungry. Make sure to get one with an average to good energy star rating.
Toilets
Replace water-wasting toilets with low-flow ones.
Use recycled water instead of drinking water for flushing.
Electronics & Appliances
To keep electronic devices from sucking energy even when they are turned off, try an energy-saving smart power strip. When you cut the power to the TV, it automatically cut power to the peripherals.
Again, the Energy Star label rules with this appliance. Energy Star refrigerators have more insulation, a high-efficiency compressor and more precise temperature controls than other units.
ENERGY STAR appliances can save the environment and save you some dough!
Shower
If you want to cut your water usage in half in the shower, a low-flow shower head will do the trick. Now don’t be put off by the name “low flow”. There are great new shower heads in the market that actually simulate high-flow units pretty well, but use 50% less water while doing so. A very worthwhile investment since it only cost between $50 – $100, but may end up saving you thousands.
Turn of the shower while you shampoo and condition your hair and save about 50 gallons of water per week.
Walls
If you want a fresh look for your home, consider high-quality paints that are formaldehyde-free, non-crystalline silica, acetone-free, and zero or low VOC with zero VOC pigments.
Sink & Taps
Leaky taps is one of the main contributor for your water bill. A leaky faucet that drips once per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons of water per year.
Windows
Energy efficient windows is a great investment, but it can be one of the most costly. Good double or triple-pane insulated glass material and low-emittance (Low-E) coatings can run into the thousands if you plan to have it fitted for your entire home. But it is a very worthwhile investment helping you to minimize heat loss in winter and heat gain during the hot summer months, reducing your energy bills as an outcome! If you want to lower your energy bill by up to 15%, replace your windows with dual- or triple-pane windows.
With so many other great ways to save energy and money, I would recommend getting the windows done if you can fit it comfortably within your budget.
Go Solar
Go solar at home and receive your energy from the sun. Free energy, how does that sound?
Recycling your paper, bottles, and cans.
Separate bins in your home for recycling. Simple & Easy.
