I received a very satisfying compliment on the weekend when my friend told me, “your skin looks so good without makeup”. The fact was….. I did have makeup on. I applied natural foundation and concealer. But it blended so well together that it seemed almost transparent on the skin, even in bright translucent lighting or under sunlight.
I was able to achieve a natural look using a sheer layer application technique. Let me give you some quick tips to achieve the best results out of a concealer
1) Get the concealer shade that matches 90 – 100% of your skin tone. If you can’t find something that matches completely, you’ll be flushing your money and makeup skills down the toilet. It’s so important to get the concealer that matches your skin tone.
2) Before applying any foundation or concealer, if you skin is dry, make sure you moisturise first to plump up your skin before applying.
3) Once you get the matching shade, you need to blend it well with your other makeup such as foundation or blush. A makeup sponge can be used to blend in a gentle back-and-forth dotting motion.
4) Don’t put a large amount on. Put a small dotted amount on your finger and move from the outside corner of the eye inward, and back out again.
5) Don’t use concealer on freckles, moles and dark pigmentations because they require heavier layers which wouldn’t make it look natural.
6) Pay particular attention to corner areas of the face such as the corner of the eyes, mouth and nose bridge. Any mishap can make it look powdery and unnatural
7) Concealer is not only for the face, it can be used for the body. To hide spider veins, use a yellow-based concealer.
8) Apply in light even layers. It should not be thick or cakey. Smile, or make some exaggerated facial expressions to find any areas that needs fixing.
9) Tissues are great to even out the tone by blotting over uneven spots
10) The secret is to brush a light coating of compact translucent powder to set the concealer and give it a natural look. (remember light coating only)
Bonus Tip: Having smooth health skin is the key. I believe I have healthy skin. Maybe a few minor blemishes here and there. But having healthy skin makes it so much easier for me to apply makeup to achieve a flawless finish. I doubt if my skin was full of blemishes, I could achieve the same flawless results. Therefore, my first skin care priority is always achieving natural healthy skin first.
