Why Choose to Eat Organic Foods?
| Why choose to eat organic foods when it is cheaper to go with conventionally processed foods. Is organic food really better?
Why eat organic when you have television shows like ‘Today Tonight’ and ‘A Current Affair’ using official Australian food agencies to make claims there is no evidence of a nutritional difference between organic and conventional processed foods. |

Organic Foods Taste Great
Putting all health benefits aside, when it comes to food, I for one am mostly concerned with the taste. You’ll love the taste of beautifully cooked dishes using organic ingredients. Common sense tells us that using well balanced soil will grow strong healthy plants that taste great. In most instances, organic foods tend to be sweet and richer in flavour due to the higher level of vitamins, flavonoids or antioxidants in organic foods. Many of the antioxidants are poly-phenols, flavonoids and other volatile compounds. They are compounds that are responsible for a high proportion of the flavours in the foods we eat. Organic fruits are sweeter, vegetables have more flavour and meats are more nutritious to our bodies.
Stay away From Pesticide Residues
Organic farming keeps harmful chemicals and pesticides out of the food we eat and beverages we drink. Organically derived products are free from harmful toxic chemicals. The average conventional commercially grown apple has multiple toxic synthetic chemicals on its skin even after washing. These includes pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, and fungicides….etc. Toxic residues from these chemicals are found on conventionally grown fruit, herbs, plants and vegetables and even snacks and it’s potentially cancer causing.
Organic foods meet stringent standards.
Only products that meet the strict standards of the organic guidelines are able to display the “Certified Organic” seals. Certifying bodies operate according to strict international standards. Australia’s largest certified organic bodies includes
* NASAA - The National Association for Sustainable Agriculture is the nation’s leading organic certifier – focused on providing quality, cost efficient organic certification services.
* OFC - Organic Food Chain
* OFA - The Organic Federation of Australia (OFA) was established in 1998 as the peak body for the organic industry in Australia.
NO Artificial Additives
You’ll be glad to know that the use of antibiotics, anti-microbials, hormones, synthetic preservatives, artificial colourings, are prohibited in organic food production. A growing number of consumers, and especially those dealing with chronic illness, are switching to organic food. A key motivation for consumers doing this is because it is less toxic and more natural.
Ok Organic food is Great…. But it’s too expensive!
I guess it is really a choice that you need to make. I’m certain most households can afford to buy organic produce. Official household spending statistics in Australia and the UK reveal that the average family spends five times more on junk food, take-away (carry-out food), alcohol, and tobacco than on fruits and vegetables, and five times more on recreation than on fruits and vegetables. If you cut back on some junk and make way for some organic food in your diet, then it all balances out. You are the one to make the choice to priorities what is important to you when it comes to you and your family when it comes to eating.
