Steps to Remove Calluses From Hands & Feet

Calluses are formed on the skin where constant friction is applied for an extended period of time. Typically, you’ll find calluses on the sole of your feet and palms of your hands where the skin is most exposed to rubbing.

Regular activities such as weightlifting in the gym, playing the guitar, walking in uncomfortable shoes, carrying shopping bags, gardening work, or simply just writing with a pen for extended periods can cause calluses to develop.

Calluses poses no health concerns, but they are not pretty to touch or look at. More a cosmetic nuisance than anything.

The only way to avoid calluses is to avoid any work – but that is not possible.

So if you’re like me, someone who likes wearing uncomfortable fancy looking shoes to look beautiful – the following steps will help get rid of the calluses that is to come.

1) Soak calluses in water

First you need to soften the skin. Prepare a bucket of lukewarm water and add a cup of sea salt or epsom salt. Soak the affected areas for 20 minutes to half hour until the skin is soft.

2) Pumice Stone

Without taking the affected body parts out of the water, start scrubbing the areas lightly with a pomice stone. Continue until most of the hardened skin has been scrubbed off. The calluses should come off easily in the water. Only scrub off about 70 Р80% of the thickened skin.

3) Salt Scrub

After scrubbing with the pumice stone, take your body out of the water and using a salt scrub, body scrub or foot scrub, polish the affected areas to loosen and remove any remaining dead skin cells.

4) Moisturise

After all the rubbing and scrubbing, your skin will be in a rather fragile state. Now is the time to seal in the moisture and start the healing by applying a rich moisturising cream.

5) Seal in moisture

Apply a plastic bag or gloves over your hands or feet immediately after the cream is applied to trap in the moisture and enhance the healing of the skin. You can leave it on overnight or just for an hour before removing. This will allow your skin to regenerate and heal

Repeat the process from 1 – 5 until you are satisfied with the results. Remember not to scrub too deep into the skin as this can cause bleeding and infection.

calluses are your body’s natural defense against friction and pressure

NB. Never use the above on any fragile or sensitive skin areas such as the face and neck.
