Pregnancy Skin Care Tips & Secrets

Uncontrollable hormones flying through your body during pregnancy means blotchy facial skin, unwanted stretch marks, nasty acne, sore legs & Feet…….and other skin problems. Find pregnancy skin care tips to help treat your skin conditions?

Before we even begin to go into your personal skin problems, it is vitally important to put the safety of your unborn child first. In choosing the skin care products to use, only use organic natural skin care products which are non toxic and chemical free. What you put onto your skin during pregnancy gets absorbed into the blood stream (even in small quantities) and ultimately can cause harmful effects to your unborn.

Avoid products that contain the following ingredients:
Sodium Laurel/Laureth sulphates
Salicylic acid
Retinoids
Propylene Glycol
Parabens
Petrochemicals Petroleum by products
DEA, TEA
Animal derivatives and harmful chemicals.

Blotchy Skin Problems

During pregnancy, you may notice blotchy yellowish or brownish patches present around the T-junction of your face on the forehead, nose, cheeks and chin. This is caused by the increase rush of the hormones of progesterone and estrogen through your body triggering an increase of melanin cells in your skin.

Avoid strong intense sunlight at all cost as increase sun exposure will further trigger your melanin cells making your blotchy skin condition worse. Apply a natural organic sun screen to filter out the harmful UVA & UVB radiation. Note that this rush in hormones is normally temporary and will normalize after pregnancy.

Stretch Marks

Stretch marks can be quite unattractive, and it is a main concern for pregnant women wanting to look good. Basically, stretch marks are caused by the loss of skin’s elastin and collagen and contributing factors may include:

Heriditary – It has been suggested that some people are more genetically prone to stretch marks than others. If your mother or sisters develop stretch marks, the chances are, you will develop stretch marks.

Sudden continuous stretching of the skin – usually around the belly, hips and buttoch area during pregnancy or for people who have a sudden jump in weight gain.

Poor nutrition & Hydration – Supple & hydrated skin will stretch better. Make sure to keep your body hydrated all the time by drinking plenty of water and keeping the skin moisturized by applying a toxic free stretch cream.

To minimize and reduce the number of stretch marks you get during pregnancy, the trick is to start your skin care regime early, preferably 1 – 2 months into your pregnancy. Drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated, constantly massage the affected areas with a good massage oil to increase the blood circulation and to increase skin elasticity, and use a rich stretch mark cream for your belly and hips area to keep your skin well moisturized.

Here are some great products to to help prevent stretch marks from developing:
Burt’s Bees Mama Bee Belly Butter
It’s specially formulated to help skin retain moisture and elasticity during your pregnancy. Keeping your skin healthy during pregnancy means more comfort now and helps belly bounce back into shape later. Phthalate- and paraben-free.

Hair

Many women find that their hair becomes thicker and more lustrous during pregnancy.

Many also notice that the texture of their hair changes during pregnancy, straight hair often begins to curl, curly hair begins to straighten, oily hair may become more oily while dry hair may become increasingly brittle.

The brittle hair is usually caused by a depletion of protein sources in your body. To counter this affect, simply use a rich organic treatment conditioner or oil after shampooing to give your hair back the hydration and shine it needs.

After giving birth many women experience sudden lose of more hair than usual. Not to worry, this is quite common and you’re not going bald. All those hormones in your body during pregnancy was making your normal hair grow and preventing it from falling out. When your hormones begin to calm down 2 – 3 months after pregnancy, the excessive hair loss is just the backlog of a natural occurrence.

Avoid colouring or dying your hair as many of these products contain a cocktail of nasty chemicals that can cause potential harm to your unborn.

For a great organic hair treatment for dry brittle hair, try John Masters Organics Dry Hair Nourishment & Defrizzer. It contains a blend of 100% pure plant and essential oils chosen for their protective, moisturizing and restorative properties, this leave-in treatment is proven to be excellent for dry and frizzy hair.

Acne

Pregnant women often struggle with acne, especially since many acne medications are unsafe to use during pregnancy. It’s particularly important to avoid the oral prescription drug isotretinoin (Accutane or Roaccutane), which can cause serious birth defects. Avoid using topical tretinoin-like Retin-A or topical products containing salicylic acid, and also stay away from tetracycline antibiotics.

During pregnancy, stress management is extremely important, not only in terms of your overall health, but in terms of your acne breakouts. Controlling stress may help to control your acne. Along with stress, keeping an healthy diet and regularly exercising can help control acne. Regular daily exercise can help to increase blood flow to the skin, and will help it to be more tone and stay more healthy.

A variety of natural remedies for acne are available that are safe for use during pregnancy. Some of the herbs and natural ingredients that these items might have in them can include Oleum Melaleuca, Oleum Lavandula, Oleum Carophylii, Calendula Officinalis, Symphytum, Echinacea, Arctium lappa, Bulbine frutescence, Lavender essesntial oil, Azadirachta, Melaleuca Alternifolia or Tea Tree Oil, and Aspalathus linearis.

Treat acne specifically for your skin type. Normally the skin will become more oily and sensitive. Find the right natural organic cleansing, toning, exfoliating and detoxifying agents to help combat the oil and bacteria on your skin.

For a great organic facial mask to cleanse your skin, try Pangea Organics Japanese Matcha Tea with Acai & Goji Berry Mask. This facial mask does everything from exfoliating and detoxifying to remineralizing and even reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

No doubt, you will be carrying a lot more weight on your body during pregnancy. I’m sure if you talk to any pregnant women, they will share their agony of aching feet and legs. There are many great organic natural massage oils and creams specifically designed for the leg and feet that will help you reduce the pain you may be suffering.

    Hello everyone,

Baby health is so important – we all want to avoid chemicals in our food, milk and our household while being pregnant. It is very important. There are alot of chemicals in skincare today, and pregnant women should only use chemical free or Organic face creams.

Your skin is an organ – that you are sharing with your unborn child. Any chemicals applied to your skin will feed the growth of your child. And please do your research on the internet regarding chemicals in skin care products.

My personal recommendation, is the Made from Earth product line. They are at http://www.madefromearth.com . . .They are completely chemical free and organic, and their products have a shelf life of 6 months, because they are not presevred with chemicals, but they do use quality ingredients. I used their 3 Berry Face Serum while I was pregnant, and its a great face cream I highly recommend.

    Best of luck to everyone!
