Our beloved true blue Aussie Vegemite has won the the inaugural 2009 Agriculture & Food “From Paddock to Plate” Banksia Award, sponsored by the Australian Food and Grocery Council (AFGC).

This prestigious environmental award recognises outstanding environmental achievements by businesses, government and individuals. It was presented to Kraft Foods Australia by AFGC executive Ms Carnell and she says, “Kraft Foods Australia has shown an exceptional commitment to sustainable practices with its hero brand Vegemite – which is known and enjoyed by all Australians”

Ms Carnell said Australian food and grocery manufacturers continued to explore efficiencies with lower energy use and sustainable packaging options being adopted across the board.

A fitting award to a company that has greened its Vegemite production operations by:

• Reduced waste water by over 65%
• Reduced energy consumption by over 52%
• Environmental savings of over $1 million

Kraft Foods Australia spokesman, Simon Talbot, said the organisation recognised that it has only commenced its mission of improving the sustainable production of all Kraft Foods brands and had this to say, “While we are delighted to be recognised for our commitment to sustainable production, we very much recognise that we have only started our environmental journey. Moving forward we look forward to continuing to build on our current sustainability performance and improving the manufacturing process of Vegemite and all Kraft Foods brands,” Mr Talbot said.

Congratulations Vegemite!
