How are ingredients sourced by Weleda?
At Weleda, all plants are—biodynamic®, organic, wild-crafted and natural—are processed immediately after they are harvested. Weleda's dedicated farmers and partners work with great care to clean the roots, peel off the bark and hand-select the best blossoms and leaves. Whole plants are often used to treat the entire being, while selected plant components are also extracted, such as the roots, seeds, bark, leaves, blossoms and fruits.
What Ingredients Are Used in Weleda Skin Care?
Weleda cultivates its own biodynamic® gardens at the source of its production facilities in Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Argentina, Brazil and New Zealand. At Weleda, at least 300 healing plants are biodynamically grown and harvested for use in both homeopathic and anthroposophic medicines, as well as skin care formulations.
Is Weleda Certified Organic?
Yes, Weleda is certified by BDIH.
Founded in Europe in 1921, Weleda has always followed and often exceeded the governing laws and certification standards in both the personal care and pharmaceutical industries.
The BDIH, a German Association that has developed guidelines for Certified Natural Cosmetics, serves as an "Association for Safety" in the health care and personal care industries. The BDIH is a member of both the European Health Product Manufacturers Association (EHPM) and the German Federation of Food Law and Food Science (BLL).
"Products bearing the BDIH seal of approval use natural ingredients like high-quality plant-based oils, fats and waxes, herbal extracts, floral waters or essential oils and aromatherapy fragrances, obtained wherever possible from controlled biological cultivation, or controlled biological wild collection. No organic-synthetic dyes, synthetics fragrances, ethoxylated raw materials, silicon, paraffin or other mineral oil derivatives are used." (BDIH)
Does Weleda Have a Fair Trade Policy?
Fair Trade is an inherent component of Weleda’s philosophy and practices. Over the past 85-years, Weleda has molded the definition of modern-day Fair Trade. To Weleda, “Fair Trade” means “global wellbeing” and involves partnering with ingredient cultivators throughout the world to support the area’s ecological, economical, educational and social environments. Such endeavors improve both the quality of the farmer’s land and crops, as well as the quality of Weleda’s end formulations. Weleda works with local farmers, helping them to convert their conventional farms into sustainable, organic agriculture. This dedicated process provides educational support in ecological and sustainable harvesting practices, as well as monetary support for necessary supplies and equipment. In addition, Weleda establishes a guaranteed quantity of crops that it will purchase each year from these partners in order to provide their local communities with a stable economic structure. Such practices uphold Weleda's founding virtue, "In harmony with nature and the human being."
