1. Are Burt's Bees products natural and how do you define "natural"? (Back To Top)

Burt's Bees currently offers more than 80 formulas that are over 98% natural. Forty-two of our products are 100% natural! We define the term "natural" as: "Any substance that is harvested from nature and then isolated and purified by a variety of environmentally responsible techniques such as filtration, fermentation, distillation, and expressing".

2. What isn't "natural" in your products? (Back To Top)

Products that are less than 100% natural may contain minute amounts of the following ingredients in concentrations of a fraction of a percent. They are added to stabilize or enhance the product, or simply to comply with Federal regulations.

" Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E) and Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A): Synthetic vitamins with extended shelf life that benefit the skin.
" Alcohol Denaturants: Required by Federal law for products containing alcohol (derived from yellow corn).
" Chelating Agents: Added to soap to provide sudsing action when used in mineral rich hard water.
" Sucrose Stearate: An emulsifier made from sugar and vegetable oil.

3. Do your products contain artificial colors or fragrance? (Back To Top)

We use only natural colors in our personal care products and cosmetics. Some of these are beta-carotene, chlorophyll, titanium dioxide, mica, iron oxides, and carmine. These natural colors have a long history of safe usage unlike many artificial colors that have been banned by the FDA over the years.

We use fragrance in products that are not compatible with essential oils and in some cases to create a product whose scent is more appealing to the consumer.

4. Do you use preservatives or stabilizers in your products? (Back To Top)

Burt's Bees products contain only natural preservatives that both inhibit the growth of microorganisms and enhance product stability. We are proud to have developed a natural preservative for our water-based products (such as lotion) that mimic the defense systems found in the human body. Our water-free products may be preserved by their natural essential oil content, vegetable glycerin, or zinc oxide, rosemary extract, and Vitamin A and Vitamin C. We do not use artificial preservatives including methyl paraben or diazolidinyl urea.

5. Are your products hypoallergenic? (Back To Top)

There is no defined methodology to test for allergic reactions in beauty products nor does the FDA regulate use of the term "hypoallergenic." Consequently, we do not position our products as hypoallergenic. Our products contain safe and effective ingredients that have withstood the test of time including beeswax, botanicals, and essential oils. Our products do not contain petroleum-synthesized fillers and artificial preservatives that may irritate the skin. A list of ingredients can be found for each product by clicking on the image of that product in our catalog section.

6. Are your products non-comedogenic? (Back To Top)

This term refers to ingredients in beauty products that clog the pores and can cause blackheads, pimples, or cosmetic-related acne. We use beeswax, plant oils, and iron oxides instead of potentially comedogenic ingredients like mineral oil, petrolatum, paraffin, and red dyes that are commonly found in personal care products and cosmetics.

7. Do you test on animals and do your products contain animal-derived ingredients?

Burt's Bees does NOT conduct product or ingredient tests of any kind on animals. A few of our products contain ingredients derived from animals such as beeswax, royal jelly, milk, and carmine.

8. Do your products provide protection from the sun? (Back To Top)

We do not use chemically-derived sunscreens in our products. However, many Burt's Bees facial products contain ingredient titanium dioxide, a natural ingredient that offers a physical block from the sun.

9. Is comfrey a safe ingredient in skin care products? (Back To Top)

Comfrey is an herb that contains the healing agent allantoin and is used to treat skin irritations. Topical preparations made with comfrey infusions are known to speed the healing process of the skin. Burt's Bees has used comfrey for safe and effective external skin care applications for nearly 20 years without any known incidence of internal bodily harm. Our use of comfrey is supported by centuries of trusted folklore applications.

10. Why do you use aluminum packaging for some of your products? (Back To Top)

We use aluminum packaging because it can be recycled efficiently in most communities along with your soda and beer cans. Our aluminum containers are lined with a material that prevents the product from penetrating and dissolving the aluminum.

How Long Has Burt's Bees Been in Available? (Back To Top)

Since 1984 in Maine USA. Roxanne Quimby and Burt Shavitz teamed up selling candles made from the beeswax created as a by-product of Burt's honey business. At the very first craft fair, they sold $200 worth, and by the end of the first year, sales climbed to $20,000. Their fine attention to detail was an integral part of their success.

Today, Burt's Bees are the leading manufacturer of Earth-friendly natural personal care products, with sales topping $250 million in 2006. Burt's Bees manufacture over 150 products in categories including face care, body care, hair care, lip care, men's grooming, baby care and outdoor remedies.

11. Help, I forgot to remove my lip balm from my pocket before doing my wash!

Here are few suggestions for removing lip balm from clothing that has gone through the wash and dry cycles:

-Soak clothing in boiling water with detergent. Repeat until the stain is removed.

-Turn water heater on washing machine to highest setting and wash with detergent.

-If these attempts fail to remove stains, try commercial stain removers or dry cleaning.
